New brick gable on C16th farmhouse - West Norfolk

The gable end of this C16th grade 2 farmhouse had been built up using modern, hard fletton bricks which were then painted with an impermeable masonry paint. This gable had completely replaced a damaged C17 brick gable. The bricks were not in keeping with the house, spalling, and the paint was failing in many places. It was decided that removing the bricks would not be practical as the wall was adding to the structural support of the original timber, wattle and daub walls behind and was supporting new roof purlins. On this occasion and in conjunction with the Conservation Officer, it was decided to construct a secondary brick wall, tied with stainless ties to the fletton brick wall.
The new gable wall was then built in English bond using new hand made 2" (50mm) bricks and hot lime mortar.
